Lent 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Family Fast Day in 1960, when a group of Catholic women joined together at Lent to do something extraordinary: members of the Catholic Women’s League, the Union of Catholic Mothers and the National Board of Catholic Women held the first fast day in aid of mothers and babies in Dominica. They expected to raise £500, but actually raised a remarkable £6,000. The next year they reached a staggering £27,000!
Every Lent since then, Catholics across England and Wales have teamed up with us to help some of the poorest communities in the world.
CAFOD Fast Days have raised over £65 million in the last 50 years. Just imagine how many people that’s helped around the world.
