St Thomas More Westcliff Fairtrade Enterprise Day

Schools Volunteers Joan Risby and Peter Jones write: “Our role was to introduce the 2012 Enterprise Day Fairtrade Or Not Fairtrade.

We presented a general history of Fairtrade and ran the Fairtrade Wheel Activity (from Tradecraft) which highlights the Social, Economic, Political, Historic, Environmental and Moral aspects of Fairtrade.

We then used a Fairtrade video with “rapping bananas” which is pretty “naff”. We challenged the students to produce a better one throughout the day and perform it before the fashion show.

After our introduction the students were asked to design an outfit from recycled clothing and take part in a fashion parade. They needed to work as a team to cost out the materials used, consider what the farmers could earn, what was their USP etc . We supported the activity throughout the day and then acted as judges.

Great raps were written and the outfits designed by the students … just take a look at the photos!”
