Advent Newsletter now online and Typhoon Haiyan update

As we begin Advent, a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the coming of the Lord, we also take time to reflect over the past few months.

Not surprisingly, it has been a busy few months in the CAFOD Brentwood office with Harvest Fast Day and of course the destructive force that was Typhoon Haiyan and you can read a full round up of events by clicking on the link below:

Year 6

Year 6 Our Lady of Lourdes, Wanstead

Schools and parishes were extremely generous in their support of Harvest Fast Day, raising over £65,000. Over 25 primary schools received a visit from a schools volunteer – a possible record!

There were also several secondary school visits during the period, including the CJSR schools day where twelve schools from across the Diocese came together to hear about child trafficking. CAFOD Groups have also been busy organising their own fundraising events – with St Angela’s & St Bonaventure’s school in Forest Gate singing in Spitalfields Market on Thursday 12th December 5-7pm.

With an update from Hungry for Change campaign and opportunities to fundraise, take part in sponsored events, buy World Gifts – even switching your energy company – there’s plenty for everyone in this issue.

Of course, whilst producing the newsletter the terrible events in the Philippines unfolded.

There has been a tremendous amount of support for the Philippines Typhoon Haiyan appeal, with schools, parishes and individuals giving generously. Nearly £100,000 from the Brentwood diocese has been received (CAFOD has raised over £2m to date) and the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) – of which CAFOD is a member – has received some £67m to date.

CAFOD is working with local partners in the Philippines to ensure people in the most remote areas get vital aid after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the country. Click here to read what Fr Jose Taz Lasola from the Padre Pio mission in Roxas, on the island of Panay, has to say about the impact of the typhoon.

Finally, Joanna, Denise and Mary take this opportunity to thank you for all the support you have given CAFOD Brentwood over the past year, whether taking a campaign action, taking part in a sponsored event, holding a fundraising event, volunteering your time, giving or praying. It truly is appreciated.

The office will be closed Friday 20th December to Friday 3rd January inclusive, re-opening on Monday 6th January. God Bless, and a happy and Holy Christmas to you all.
