We are proud to announce that Cathedral Church of St Mary & St Helen has received the first Livesimply award in Brentwood Diocese – and is also the first Cathedral in England and Wales to win the award.

The award was announced on Saturday 7 December, following months of preparation in the parish and a rigorous assessment by the Eco-congregation team, who coordinate the award on behalf of CAFOD.

St Mary and St Helen’s has followed a Livesimply plan for the last nine months, orchestrated by a specially designated project team. The plan has included encouraging parishioners to walk to Mass, to eat less meat, and even to make people smile. Other events were a community effort and focused on specific issues such as undertaking an environmental audit of the parish buildings, highlighting areas for future action. The parish also changed all the light bulbs in the Cathedral (of which there are hundreds) to low energy light bulbs.

The award
The Livesimply award is not just a prize, it is a way of life. The scheme offers parishes the chance to recognize the ways in which they already live simply and sustainably, and to build on these actions. The ultimate goal is to truly live out the ideals of our Catholic faith, such as supporting our brothers and sisters at home and overseas, and living in tune with God’s creation.

“This is a significant moment for our parish, an opportunity to celebrate all we have done, but also to remind ourselves of all that can be done”

– Brenda Underwood
